OGBUNIGWE - Mass Killer
Have you heard of the great ogbunigwe, if you haven’t, then you haven’t also heard of the Nigerian civil war of 1967-1970.
The air missile that
turned out to become a catastrophic land weapon for the Biafrans.
Now, let’s take a look at this weapon of mass destruction.
The ogbunigwe (mass killer) was originally designed as an air missile to combat the Russian MIG 15 jet fighter, which the Nigerian army used in launching an attack in Enugu Airport.
What turned air missile into a disastrous bomb?
We are about to find out.
The Federal troops had already conquered Enugu the capital of Biafra, and were happily and gallantly matching to take over Awka and Onitsha, our centre of commence, I guess they were singing songs as they matched on with their superior fire arms.
They encountered the exhausted Biafra’s soldiers with their commander; they must have exhausted their fire arms as they were left with the ogbunigwe which was meant for the jet fighters. The Biafran soldiers started running for dear lives when the commander ordered them to come back; he ordered them to place the ogbunigwe horizontally instead of the original vertical position. He ordered them to fire at the oncoming Federal troops, and when they fired, hehehe, ma ndi gbara agba, ma ndi agbara agba didn’t understand what happened next. The outcome was so devastating; the Federal troops didn’t see it coming. Lots of lives and valuable weapons were lost, even the river below the bridge felt the effect as it was thrown up and widely spread by the generated waves. It travelled as far as 10-30meters. At this point I want to give a shout out to ndi Igbo, IGBO KWENU!!! (great and wonderful people, full of great ideas. If only we can unite and work together, we will shake the World).
The next morning, the incident of the previous day brought people to marvel at the strength of this invention and also to bury the dead. The destruction caused by this weapon made an elderly man exclaim, “Ogbuefa n’ igwe” (it has killed them in great number) hence the name, OGBUNIGWE.
This great invention of the Igbos surprised the federal troops and not just them but the entire World, because never has such a weapon been designed before, this was a period when technology has not greatly advanced.
I doff my cap for the Igbo nation in Africa, great, hardworking and amazing people.
