OGBAUKWU CAVE AND WATERFALLS

Ogbaukwu cave and waterfalls, Owerre Ezukala, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State is a cave like no other – after your visit, you probably will want to rent one of the cave apartments
for the night.

A thirty minutes drive from Umunze, the Orumba South Local Government Headquarters or perhaps, the most prominent town around the area will bring you to Eke Fada, Owerre Ezukala, the market at the junction leading to the cave.

Though the cave is only accessible by a pathway, Owerre Ezukala sits by a Trunk “B” road. The town or let us say, the Local Government borders Abia State.

From the Eke Fada, a faint Sign Post welcomes and leads us to the cave.

A fifteen minutes drive on the rocky path, voila! “WELCOME TO OWERRE EZUKALA CAVE AND WATERFALL (Ogbaukwu, the World’s acclaimed tourism destination).”

If you had been to the cave before June 2016, you would not have been welcomed with the railings. With the visit of the Governor of Anambra State, much improvement has come in place.

The thrill starts from descending the more than eighty-seven steps. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR TOURING BOOTS WITH YOU!

Descending the steps, you are already been welcomed by the continuous “Puuuuuuuh” sound of the waterfall.
I would have advised you to get your raincoats too...but it is better you feel the cold steam of the cascade.

Taking a selfie is a must, but be prepared to cry to a blurred picture. Don’t ask me why!

Oh! The engravings on the surrounding rock... what are they? Damn! Tourists have put down their names on the rocks! A selfie is OK as evidence that you visited Owerre Ezukala. Leave nature to nature!

Grrrrrr! Its cold!

You have to pass the back of the waterfall to the main fun, the Obi-Ogba – the sitting room of the cave. The splash from the falls has created a carpet – a royal entrance, it is to the arched doors to the inner cave compartment.

Wow! Clumpy Clumpy roof. Hope you are ready to do the Ikpo Ogba, in the language of the natives, “diving into the cave”?

“Where is my torchlight? No! I mean the bigger one not the phone torchlight.” The phone torchlight wouldn’t come on. The mystery of the Ogba cave!
OBI-OGBA

“On your fours, folks!” The hallway through the cave is not high enough for you to stand, “Crawl, crawl, crawl till we are in a staircase."

Shhhh! the bees are sleeping...noise will disrupt them.

Oh my! What’s that? Unbelievable, an elephant foot! I forgot to tell you that there are wild animals in here. Not to worry, as far as you booked an appointment with the cave custodians, they know how they inhibit the animals. So don’t enter a forbidden compartment or lunch is ready for these creatures.

Crawl, crawl, crawl. Is that a spanner? Who kept it there? Hmmm. Nature is also into engineering.

Its hours in here, hope we still find our way out?

Wait, I just saw something...a gun, a gun of rocks. Wunderbar!

Huh! We can’t explore all these rooms. We’d better start going.

The next time you visit southeast Nigeria; do not forget to visit the biggest cave in West Africa. It’s an experience you have to add to your timeline.
