THE MYSTIC TRIBE
One would not help but imagine the mystery behind, the mystic tribe. Even at this apex of technology and scientific innovation in Africa and the world at large, the wonders surrounding the mystic tribe "the Surma tribe" of south western Ethiopia, is yet hidden perhaps not only hidden but unknown to all and sundry.
Saying that the Surma people of south western Ethiopia are the 8th wonder of the modern and even the ancient worlds, is no mere speculation neither is it an exaggeration,
is a question of fact and could be verified if critically looked into.
The Surma tribe is made up of two distinct tribes, the Suri and Mursi tribe. These fellas believe so much in Africa culture and values and make sure it is preserved in their own way irrespective of what the outside world and the larger society at large might think of them.
As mentioned earlier about their great love for African culture and values, the "aforementioned people" also have this great love for
body arts which they do using local beautification techniques. They are generally distinguished by their luxuriant and impressive lip discs, which is a sign of beauty and status among the female folks.
This might come as a surprise to my readers as most of us have this great love for our much cherished dentition, but in the Surma tribe, ladies ripe for marriage, actually get their lower dentition removed in order to appear more beautiful than they ever were. Having done this, the maidens insert a clay lip disc to their lower lip and this singular act makes men in the community endeared to them.
This is real and infact not a fairy tale, as an Ibo adage would say "the firewood of a clime cooks for that clime in particular." In the Surma tribe, the larger the clay lip disc a woman's mouth can accommodate the higher her economic value as regards marriage (in the Surma tribe bride price is paid using cattle i.e the larger the lip clay in a woman's mouth the higher the number of cattle the woman is married with).
Marriage in this tribe is left for the strong and the desperate as a male within the tribe would only get married or considered maritally matured; by possessing sixty (60) or more cattle, and by being able to brave pains administered to him by his opponent as these are
criteria for marriage within the Surma tribe (in the Surma tribe two or more males contend for a woman by flogging each other, whoever wins is the person that can persevere the more pain and is fit to take the bride home after paying the bride price which is done with cattle).
To be continued...
